Latimer, Milton Keynes

In January 2022, Apollo was commissioned to refurbish a detached property in Stony Stratford. The client, a management accountant with a strong focus on sustainability, sought to transform the house into a comfortable, energy-efficient home meeting EnerPHit standards.

The project involved stripping out and reconfiguring the existing structure, requiring meticulous attention to detail due to the property's boundaries and the need for airtight membranes both externally and internally.

The refurbishment aimed to give the home a modern aesthetic while integrating sustainable features. Key upgrades included installing triple-glazed windows and a large sliding door to provide easy access to the garden. The exterior was enhanced with HardiePlank cladding on the first floor and brick slips on the ground floor. Achieving EnerPHit standards posed a unique challenge, necessitating the use of Glass Reinforced Plastic brackets to fix finishes, allowing space for insulation and weather membranes.

Inside, the property was extensively modernised. A new kitchen was installed and an MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery) system was added to improve indoor air quality and energy efficiency. The existing staircase was replaced with a contemporary open tread design featuring a glazed balustrade, adding to the modern feel of the interior. The result was a warm and welcoming environment that met the client’s sustainability goals.

To further enhance energy efficiency, an air source heat pump was fitted, providing both heating and cooling options. The project also involved installing a new single ply membrane roof with thin solar PV strips, significantly increasing the building's sustainability. Despite facing challenging weather conditions, the project was completed on time within the seven-month schedule.

Apollo will return for phase two of the project. This phase will involve installing an additional air source heat pump, fitting new bathrooms, and updating finishes on the first floor, further enhancing the property's comfort and energy efficiency.
